Volleyball Team Downs Southern In Home Season Finale

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -  In their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference win, the Prairie View A&M volleyball team sent their lone senior Taylor Goudeau off with a 3-1 victory over Southern Monday night at the William J. Nicks Baby Dome.

"I think that we took the momentum from yesterday's win and brought it into tonight's game," said PVAMU head volleyball coach Tacho Tyler of her team, which won in four sets Sunday against Grambling.  "Even when we were down a few points, the way we bounced back was a sign of mental toughness.  I feel as though we remained consistent in each and every set."

The Lady Panthers won by the scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-20.  Sophomore Larissa Martinez led the way for the Lady Panthers, putting down a team-high 16 kills and added seven digs and one block, while freshman Victoria Pearson added 13 kills, one assist, two service aces, two digs and five blocks (one solo, four assisted) to the win.

Goudeau finished her home stint with 12 kills, three digs and one block. Sophomore setter Erica Jimenez recorded a career high of 46 assists, along with one service ace and eight digs.  Junior libero Christen Augustine tallied 22 digs.

Southern came out running the set, however a 6-0 run by the Lady Panthers advanced their lead 12-6.  Prairie View A&M continued its roll on a couple of key kills and errors by SU and took a 20-16 lead.  Southern fought back, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Panthers took set one.

Southern opened up the second set on a 5-0 run, but PVAMU was able tie the set at 16-all before Southern took their first and only set of the game.

Out of the break in set three, Southern looked to be on point as they took an early lead, but the Lady Panthers continued to fight tooth-and-nail for their points, trading points with the last tie of the set at 12.  From that point, PVAMU came out with the advantage and took the set three taking a 2-1 lead.

In the final set, the Lady Panthers and Southern fought back-and-forth early in the set, but a solid four point run from PVAMU gave them an 18-14 advantage.  Prairie View continued its run to take set four and the match.

The Lady Panthers will return to action on Thursday, when they travel to face rival Texas Southern in 6:30 match in Houston.
