Men's Basketball To Face UNLV Wednesday

LAS VEGAS - The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team will play its third game in six days Wednesday when the Panthers face UNLV in a 9 p.m. game at the Thomas and Mack Center.

The Panthers (0-2) battled tough before the game got away from them Monday in a 100-67 loss at Oregon.

Zachary Hamilton had a game-high 23 points and added four rebounds to lead three players in double figures. Austin Starr scored 11 points off the bench, and J. D. Wallace scored 10 points and added six rebounds.

"Playing against one of last year's Final Four teams is a daunting task for any program," said Prairie View A&M men's basketball coach Byron Smith. "They will be a Top 20 program again this season. We competed really well on the boards, losing only by a 38-36 margin, which pleases me as a head coach. We need to take better care of the basketball (18 turnovers vs. Oregon), and shoot less three-point shots (27). Our defense is improving, but we have to guard better. Giving up 100 points is a higher number than the number we want to hold these types of programs to in our non-conference schedule."

Prairie View A&M returns to action in the MGM Main Events Tournament Wednesday against UNLV, which opened the season with a 108-66 win Friday over Florida A&M. The Rebels went 11-21 last season and are in their second season under head coach Marvin Menzies.

"UNLV is trying to recapture the early 1990s magic under Coach Jerry Tarkanian (when they won the NCAA Championship)," Smith said. "From early reports, they are headed in that direction with a lot of very good athletes with toughness. Their two inside players are NBA-caliber players, and their guards can drive it and stretch the defense as well. This will be another tremendous challenge for us. Moving forward, we must fight hard on the glass and do a solid job in transition defense because they want to play fast, fast, fast."
