Men's Basketball Looks To Break Through Against Houston

Prairie View A&M men's basketball returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. against Houston in game to be played at Texas Southern's H&PE Arena.

The PVAMU Sports Network radio broadcast begins at 2:45 p.m. The game will also be video streamed via FloHoops with the links to listen, watch, and get live stats at pvpanthers.com.

The Panthers (2-8) have lost five straight games but have competed and battled in every defeat, usually having small deficits in the final few minutes but not quite able to get over the hump in these contests. This past Thursday's 77-73 loss at Tulsa was perhaps the most gut-wrenching of all. Prairie View A&M battled back from a 17-point second half deficit to widdle the deficit to one with 1:23 to play but could not take the lead.

Gary Blackston scored 21 points in 23 minutes Thursday, and is averaging 18.0 points (2nd in SWAC), 6.0 rebounds (8th/SWAC), 2.7 assists (6th/SWAC), and 2.1 steals (t-2nd/SWAC). He is tied for 10th in field goal shooting (41.1%), 13th in free throw percentage (67.6), 10th in three-point field goal percentage (39.7%), and 6th in minutes played (31.4/gm.)

The Panthers will face a Houston team (8-2) that is coming off an 80-77 loss at LSU on Wednesday night. Rob Gray leads the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference with 21.4 points per game, and is also in the league's top 10 in assists per game (3.9), free throw percentage (89.5%), 3-point field goal percentage (43.9%) and 3-point field goals made per game (2.0/gm).

"I thought we played with heart and passion and finished the game the right way," said PVAMU men's head coach Byron Smith. "Houston is well coached, plays really hard, and will be a tough opponent. Their guards are two of the best we will face this season, but we will be there playing hard, playing smart, and playing together."
