The Panthers continue to get closer and closer to snapping the current losing streak, playing better than its 2-9 record and recent score would indicate. In Sunday's 92-72 loss at Houston, there were 12 ties and 12 lead changes in the game, with neither team leading by double figures until less than seven minutes remained in the contest as a late-game run by the Cougars led to the final margin.
Â
Dennis Jones and
Zachary Hamilton each scored a team-high 18 points for Prairie View A&M, and
Troy Thompson scored a season-high 11 off the bench.
Â
"The Houston game was a great basketball experience for everyone there on Sunday," said PVAMU men's basketball coach
Byron Smith. "We showed when we are locked in, we can compete with most teams, but obviously our goal is to win."
Â
Ohio (5-5) of the Mid-American Conference is coming off a 99-96 overtime loss at Marshall on Saturday. The Bobcats average just under 81 points per game and have five players averaging in double figures. In a unique side note, Wednesday's matchup on the court is one featuring the only two colleges in the country who's University bands performed in the 2017 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (PVAMU Marching Storm, Ohio University Marching 110).
Â
"Ohio scores the basketball at a good clip, so defense will once again be important," Smith said. "We will mix our defense to try and slow them down and try our best to establish ourselves on the glass on both ends of the court."
Â
The Panthers will conclude its non-conference road schedule Friday in an 8 p.m. CT game at New Mexico before its home opener Friday, Dec. 29 vs. Jarvis Christian at 3 p.m.
