HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team will complete the West portion of the first month of the 2017-18 schedule at Hawai'i Wednesday night at 11 p.m. CT
The PVAMU Sports Network will have a radio broadcast of the game beginning at 10:45 p.m. at
pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork. There will also be links to watch live online and get live stats at pvpanthers.com.
Prairie View A&M played the first seven games of the season in the Mountain (at Utah, at New Mexico State) or Pacific Time Zones (at UNLV, vs. Eastern Kentucky and vs. Georgia State in Las Vegas, at UC Santa Barbara). Wednesday's game in the Hawaiian Time Zone will be the eighth contest west of The Hill before the Panthers play in the central time zone for the first time Saturday at #8 Texas A&M at 3:30 p.m.
The Panthers (2-5) are coming off a 69-57 loss Sunday at New Mexico State.
Gary Blackston scored a game-high 19 points and just missed another double-double with nine rebounds, while adding two assists and three steals.
Dennis Jones scored a season-high 17 points and added three rebounds, and
Zachary Hamilton scored 14 points and had three rebounds for PVAMU in a game in which the Panthers never led.
"This was probably as flat offensively as we've been in a ballgame all season," said Prairie View A&M head coach
Byron Smith. "Our preparation was great. The approach was good. The shots just didn't go down, and we struggled to score. However, we were in the game. We were competitive, and were able to outrebound them (33-31), but it kind of got away from us late. We made too many turnovers. You are not going to win any game, home or on the road, especially on the road, with 24 turnovers. We turned it over too much at critical times in the game."
The Rainbow Warriors (4-2) are coming off an 80-60 loss Saturday at Utah, the first game played by Hawai'i on the mainland after playing the first five games at home. Mike Thomas (13.0 ppg) and Gibson Johnson (11.5 ppg) lead Hawai'i in scoring.
"They have some athletic guys on the perimeter and are very skilled," said Smith of Hawai'i. "It's a game where I think we match up well with them. We have to come out with the right mindset that we can get this one, but we have to get off to a good start."
