Prairie View A&M (2-6) has dropped its last three contests, the latest a 72-60 loss at Hawai'i Wednesday night in a game closer than the final score would indicate. The Panthers and Rainbow Warriors battled the entire night, and although never leading in the game, PVAMU only trailed by four with just over three minutes to play before Hawai'i made a few more plays down the stretch.
Â
And while
Gary Blackston (season-high 27 points) and
Zachary Hamilton (19 points) continued to lead the team in scoring, the Panthers got some key minutes off the bench from several old and new contributors.
Â
Shay'rone Jett had six points, including a three-pointer, while providing a lift defensively as well.
Austin Starr played a season-high 28 minutes, contributing five points and two rebounds.  Â
Keion Alexander played a season-high 20 minutes, recording season highs in rebounds (four) and blocked shots (three).
Â
All will be need against a Texas A&M squad (7-1) coming off its first loss of the season, a 67-64 defeat to Arizona Tuesday night in a game played in Phoenix.
Â
"I believe they are an Elite Eight maybe even a Final Four team with what they have," said Smith of the Aggies. "The thing about those guys is they have pros all over the floor, and they play so hard, and that's kind of rare. A lot of times when you have a lot of talent, you tend to pick and choose the spots when you play hard or when you have to. Those guys play hard from the jump, from the opening tip to the final horn."
