Men's Basketball Late Rally Falls Short At Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. – The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team lost at Grambling State 61-58 Monday night at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Troy Thompson scored 15 points to lead three Panthers in double figures. Ja'Donta Blakely scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds, and Tevin Bellinger scored 11 with four rebounds and three assists for PVAMU (8-18, 5-7).

The teams traded baskets in the early going, as a pair of free throws by Blakley gave the Panthers their last lead at 12-11 less than five minutes in. The margin stayed within five points for both teams through most of the first half, but a late GSU run gave the Tigers a 38-30 halftime advantage.

After falling behind by 12 early in the second half, Prairie View A&M fought and scratched and clawed its way into the deficit. The Panthers cut the margin to three points five different times, the last time at 61-58 on a Thompson three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining. A game-tying three to send the game to overtime was off the mark as time expired.

Prairie View A&M returns home Saturday in a 5 p.m. game against Miss. Valley State in the Pink Out Game and next Monday, Feb. 20 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a 7:30 p.m. game on Greek Night.
