Lady Panthers Basketball Snaps Golden Lions Six Game Win Streak In Nail Biter

Prairie View, Texas - The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers defeated the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Lady Golden Lions in a 62-57 win at the William J. Nicks Building Monday night.

Alexus Parker led all scorers with 23 points off the bench on 7-14 shooting from the field.  Tori Carter added 16 points on 7-13 shooting, while La'Sha Haynes stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Lady Panthers broke slowly out of the gates falling behind 8-2, but would get going on the offensive end, going on a 13-2 run keyed by baskets by Parker, Jeronia Allen, and Dominique Newman. PVAMU was in possession of a 15-10 advantage as the first quarter concluded.

PVAMU did not relinquish the lead in the 2nd quarter, as they led by as many as seven on a pair of occasions, but UAPB battled back. The Golden Lions cut the Prairie View lead to four, thanks to a three pointer from Niya Head as the first half neared its conclusion.  After the first 20 minutes of action the Lady Panthers led 30-26.

The third quarter opened with the UAPB and PVAMU trading baskets. The Golden Lions would later reduce the Lady Panthers lead to just two points on three occasions in the 3rd period, only for the Lady Panthers to come away with a timely basket to increase the lead. After three quarters of exciting action Prairie View A&M was clinging on to a 40-38 advantage.

The final 10 minutes of action proved to be just as scintillating as the first 30 minutes of the contest, as UAPB tied the game at 43 as Head drained a midrange jump shot. But the Lady Panthers would respond, as Kayla Bell sunk a layup at the other end on the opposing possession.

Later in the quarter Parker would bury a three-pointer to give Prairie View a 52-46 lead with a little more than three- minutes remaining.  PVAMU was unable to pull away as, the Lady Golden Lions would cut the lead to one as Head knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 54-53.  Parker and Bell would then combine to score the Lady Panthers next seven points to give Prairie View a 60-57 lead with, just 16 seconds left in the final quarter of play.  The Panthers forced UAPB to miss a potential game tying three-pointer, and Parker clinched the victory for the Lady Panthers as she sank a pair of free throws from the charity stripe.

The Lady Panthers look to win their third consecutive contest when they return to the hardwood to take on Alabama A&M on February 25th in Huntsville, Alabama with a live radio broadcast from KPVU 91.3 FM.
