Lady Panthers Top Alabama A&M

Huntsville, Ala.- The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M 63-50 at the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium in Huntsville, Ala. Saturday evening.
 
Dominique Newman led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 20 points, shooting 5-8 from downtown. Alexis Parker scored 16 points on 50 percent shooting off the bench for the Purple and Gold, while Tori Carter added 14 points.
 
PVAMU got off to a slow start falling behind 7-1 less than three-minutes into the contest. The Panthers would battle back outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 15-10 during the remainder of the first quarter, thanks to key baskets by Carter and Parker. PVAMU held a 16-10 advantage as the quarter ended.
 
The Lady Panthers continued their hot shooting as the second quarter began, as Newman scored seven points in the quarter. La' Sha Haynes added to the Panther's lead adding four points. Prairie View continued to play tight defense, as the Lady Bulldogs only managed to shoot 16 percent from beyond the arc. As the first half concluded with PVAMU leding 31-24.
 
PVAMU opened the second half on a 10-0 run keyed by baskets with the quartet of Haynes, Newman, Carter and Parker.  Alabama A&M would go on a scoring run of their own, cutting the Lady Panthers advantage to 45-37 with 2:07 remaining in the third quarter. But the Panthers would add to the lead at the end of the quarter, to take a 49-39 lead into the 4th.
 
The Purple and Gold opened the 4th in the same fashion they opened quarters two and three on a scoring run, as PVAMU scored the quarter's first five points. The Lady Bulldogs were only able to cut the Prairie View lead to nine once, and couldn't get any closer than nine points in the final quarter.
 
The Lady Panthers return to the hardwood on Monday in Montgomery, Alabama to take on Alabama State with tipoff set for 5:30 pm with a live radio broadcast from 91.3 KPVU FM.
