BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M University baseball team lost its Southwestern Athletic Conference road opener at Southern 6-5 Friday night at Lee-Hines Field.
The Panthers (4-18 overall, 1-3 SWAC) scored first in the first on a solo homer to right field by
Cody Den Beste, his first of the season.
Trailing 2-1, Prairie View A&M regained the lead in the third. With one out,
Corbin Jamison homered for the second straight game to left field to tie the game.
Nathan Carter followed with a doubled to left field, and advanced to third on a single to left by Den Beste.
Steven Williams' sacrifice fly scored Carter to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
After Southern (4-9, 2-5) regained the lead in the fourth, Prairie View A&M tied the game in the seventh. Jamison led off the inning with single down the left field line and advanced to second on an error. Carter's sacrifice bunt moved Jamison to third, before Den Beste's sac fly scored Jamison to tie the score at 4-4.
Southern scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh and added a run in the eighth to lead 6-4.
In the ninth, Jamison led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout and scored with two outs on a wild pitch.
Den Beste went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI to lead PVAMU at the plate. Jamison went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and RBI, and
Tyrone Thomas went 2-for-3.
Edgar Sanchez took the loss on the mound, pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs (three earned) with three walks and a season-high seven strikeouts.
Game two of the three game Southwestern Athletic Conference series is Saturday at 2 p.m.
