JACKSON, Miss. — The Prairie View A&M University softball team's bats came to life against Jackson State on Friday as the Lady Panthers earned a 7-5 victory at the JSU Softball Complex.
Junior Kelsey Coronado finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, while junior Kylar Ward-Flowers was 3-for-3 with a homerun, two runs scored, and one RBI for the Lady Panthers who won their first game of the SWAC season.
PVAMU improves to 4-16 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Jackson State drops to 7-18 overall and 0-1 in the SWAC.
The Lady Panthers struck first in the top of the second inning to get on the boards. Ward-Flowers opened up the inning with her first homerun of the season to left field to give Prairie View A&M a 1-0 lead.
In the very same inning the Lady Tigers answered back with a run at the bottom knotting the score at one. The Lady Panthers added five runs in the top of the fourth to build its lead back, 6-1.
Ward-Flowers was walked with the Lady Panthers facing one out. Hernandez singled to center field to move Ward-Flowers to second. Alyssa Garcia also singled, but this time to left field to advance each player to its next base. With the bases loaded, Amanda Ford was walked to score Ward-Flowers.
On one-out Coronado doubled to center field scoring Hernandez, Garcia and Ford. Coronado took a base to place her in scoring position. Shelby Williams delivered a two-out triple to left field to bring Coronado home to advance the Lady Panthers to a five-run lead.
In frame six, PVAMU would score a final time as Coronado homered to left field to post her first home-run of the season giving the Lady Panthers a 7-1 lead.
The Lady Tigers would score four runs in the bottom of the inning to come within two. The Lady Panthers defense held Jackson State at five to close the game 7-5.
Prairie View A&M will continue it's SWAC action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. pitch at the JSU Softball Complex.
