JACKSON, Miss. — The Prairie View A&M University softball team put on a hitting clinic in a conference doubleheader over Jackson State, as they earned a pair of wins, one in a six inning decision by the score of 11-3 and 7-1 in game two at the JSU Softball Complex Saturday.
Game 1 - PVAMU 11, JSU 3
Game one of the doubleheader started with the Lady Panthers taking a 2-0 lead in the first frame. PVAMU put together two runs, using one hit and two of the Lady Tigers errors.
Shelby Williams reached base on error taking two bases in the process. She took another base after the first out of the inning. Another error by the Lady Tigers landed Destinee Williams on first, as S. Williams crossed home plate to give the Lady Panthers its first run. D. Williams also took advantage of JSU miscues landing her on second. Kylar Ward-Flowers doubled to center field scoring D. Williams for a 2-0 lead.
Both pitchers kept out of trouble for the next three innings, but at the bottom of the fifth JSU knotted the game at two.
The Lady Panthers followed with a nine-run inning in the top of the sixth that was capped off by S. Williams again reaching base on error. She stole second and moved to third on a Briana Knowles bunt single. Later each runner stole base with S. Williams scoring, and in the same episode Knowles stole third. D. Williams walked before Knowles stole home to give PVAMU a 4-2 advantage.
Ward-Flowers reached base on another miscue by JSU, moving D. Williams within scoring distance and Ward-Flowers advanced to second on the throw. With no outs, Laurisa Hernandez (2 RBI) doubled scoring both Ward-Flowers and D. Williams. Following an out, Kelsey Coronado doubled to center field. Alyssa Garcia also doubled to put the Lady Panthers up 5-2.
Still with one out, Amanda Ford (RBI) doubled to right field scoring Garcia before Natalie McLennan (RBI) doubled to center field scoring Ford. Batting around in the inning, S. Williams doubled moving Garcia to third. Knowles reached base on a JSU error with both Garcia and McLennan scoring giving the Lady Panthers a 9-2 advantage.
Taylor Drury earned her second win of the season as she threw four shutout innings. Hernandez paced the Lady Panthers offense with two RBI and one hit.
Game 2, PVAMU 7, JSU 1
Prairie View A&M picked up right where it left off in the top of the second, as it put up three runs on three hits to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
Coronado capped of the second frame with a single to left field, before taking a base on a passed ball. Garcia was walked, on the next at bat there a pop up to third base, Garcia and Coronado took advantage both taking bases placing them in scoring position.
With one out, sac fly by McLennan scored Coronado and Garcia advanced to third. S. Williams (RBI)' bunt single scoring Garcia. S. Williams advanced to second on a passed ball, on then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Knowles doubled to close the scoring opportunities out for the Lady Panthers with a 3-0 lead.
JSU managed to get in one run in the same frame, but the next four innings went scoreless for both teams. The Lady Panthers paced another big inning in the final inning on four runs, three hits and one error to close out the game.
Ashley Higgins earned her fourth win of the season as she struck out two batters, while giving up just one run. Garcia led the Lady Panthers with two RBI, while scoring one run.
The Lady Panthers will return to field on Monday when they host non-conference Jarvis Christian for a home-opener starting at 1 p.m. for doubleheader action.
