Lady Panthers Basketball Downs Southern Lady Jaguars

Prairie View, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team defeated the Southern Lady Jaguars 70-63 inside the William J. Nicks Building.

Tori Carter and Alexus Parker led PVAMU in scoring with 20 points apiece, while Jeronia Allen added 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field.

The Lady Panthers got off to a slow start, turning the ball over three times in the opening minutes of the contest.  Southern would take advantage shooting 50 percent from the floor, as they took an 11-4 advantage with 6:00 mins left in the opening quarter.  PVAMU battled back cutting the Lady Jaguars lead to 15-12 as Parker knocked down a jump shot from beyond the three-point arc in the waning seconds of the 1st quarter.

PVAMU stayed within striking distance in the second quarter, preventing the Lady Jaguars from pushing the lead to double digits. Carter would score five consecutive points to give the Purple and Gold a 28-27 advantage with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Southern would later regain possession of the lead with 1:31 left on a Cortnei Purnell jumper. As the first half concluded with the Lady Jaguars leading 29-28 going into the locker rooms.

PVAMU would own the third quarter, as they outscored the Lady Jaguars 20-7. The Lady Panther's bench was critical, as Parker and Allen accounted for a dozen of the Lady Panthers 20 points during the third quarter. As the final 10 minutes of action was set to begin, with Prairie View A&M leading 48-36.

The Lady Panthers and Southern traded baskets as the final quarter began, however Prairie View A&M still remained in firm control of the contest, leading 62-49 with 5:10 left in the game.  The Lady Jaguars roared back, going on an 11-3 run to cut the PVAMU lead to 65-60 as Skylar O'Bear drained a three pointer with 1:10 remaining.

Parker took a walk to the charity stripe converting on a pair of free throw attempts to give the Lady Panthers a seven-point lead. The Lady Jaguars would not go away quietly, as Brianna Green converted a three-point play to reduce the lead to 67-63. The Lady Panthers were able to secure the victory as Carter and Dominique Newman drained four free throw attempts during the closing moments of the contest.

The Lady Panthers return to the hardwood Saturday, March 4th for the regular season finale against Alcorn State at the William J. Nicks Arena. Tipoff is set for 3 pm with a live radio broadcast on 91.3 KPVU FM. The night has been slated as senior night as well as fan appreciation.
