Baseball Splits Two With Jarvis Christian; Den Beste Named SWAC Hitter Of The Week

The Prairie View A&M University baseball team split a home doubleheader against Jarvis Christian, winning game one 8-7 before falling in game two 5-2 at Tankersley Field.
 
The Panthers open a three-game home SWAC series against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday at 3 p.m.
 
Game 1-Panthers 8, Jarvis Christian 7: Prairie View A&M jumped out to a big lead before winning in extra innings.
 
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Steven Williams, who went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, homered to right field to lead off the inning. Tyrone Thomas followed with a single to left center, and advanced to second on a throwing error as Carson Lee reached first. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before Kevin Macais' two-run single up the middle. Tyler Gordon was then hit by a pitch, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Garcia. Corbin Jamison's infield single scored Macias. Following a walk to Xavier Jefferson, Gordon scored on a passed ball for a 5-1 PVAMU lead.
 
After the Panthers scored two in the third to take a 7-1 lead, Jarvis Christian rallied back with runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to tie the score and force extra innings.
 
In the eighth, Jefferson singled through the right side, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Cody Den Beste then walked before Williams' walkoff single to right field, scoring Jefferson with the winning run.
 
Macais went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, and Jamison drove in two runs. Phillip Gay earned the win in relief for the Panthers.
 
Game 2 – Jarvis Christian 5, Panthers 2: Trailing 2-0 in the first, PVAMU tied the score in the home half of the inning. Jamison reached on a throwing error before Macias singled to left field. Den Beste's single to right center scored Jamison. Nathan Carter's sacrifice fly scored Macias to tie the score. However, the Panthers would not score again.Den Beste went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
 
Den Beste Named Hitter Of The Week: After batting .500 in five games last week, including four on the road, Den Beste was named the SWAC Hitter of the Week.
 
Den Beste (6-0, 175, SR, Wilmington, Ca.) hat 10 hits in 20 at-bats, scoring four runs, driving in eight and was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. Den Beste had a pair of doubles, one triple and a homer in posting a .520 on-base percentage and an .850 slugging percentage in games at Lamar, home against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and a three-game series at Southern
 
He had at least one hit in all five games, including three multi-hit games (one two-hit game, two three-hit games) and four multi-RBI Games (four two RBI games). Den Beste went 2-for-4 including a double with 2 RBI and a run scored vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Wednesday, and then went 3-for 4 with home run and 2 RBI with stolen base Friday at Southern. In Saturday's win over Southern, he went 3-for-6 including a double and a triple with 2 RBI and a run scored and stolen base.
 
On the season, Den Beste, a preseason second-team All-SWAC selection, is hitting .330 with one home run and 14 RBI.
