PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –
Ashley Higgins was unstoppable on the mound Friday afternoon, as she led the Prairie View A&M University softball team to a 4-0 shutout win over the Mississippi Valley Devilettes at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
She allowed just one hit in the top of the sixth en route to her sixth victory of the season and her seventh complete game of her sophomore campaign. Higgins struck out six batters on the day, allowing only one hit. Her six wins ties her for second-ranked in the conference.
Kelsey Coronado opened up the scoring in the second frame for PVAMU as she hit her third homerun of the season over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead.
PVAMU (9-17, 4-0 SWAC) struck again in the third with a run.
Destinee Williams led the frame with a double to left center, and came into score after advancing to third on a wild pitch, and a single up the middle by Coronado.
Prairie View scored another run in the fourth to give the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead. Natalie McLennan took one for the team as she was hit by pitch to reach base. With one out,McLennan stole second base.
Kylar Ward-Flowers then singled to right field, scoring McLennan.
The Lady Panthers scored a final time in the fifth as Coronado was walked to set up the scoring for PVAMU. With one out, a sacrifice bunt by
Amanda Ford moved Coronado to third. McLennan reached base on an error bringing Coronado across the plate.
With four unanswered runs by the Devilettes the Prairie View A&M softball team sealed the victory to win their fourth consecutive Southwestern Athletic win. This is the first four consecutive conference wins since the 2012 season.
Prairie View A&M will continue its three-game series against Mississippi Valley Saturday at Noon, as the teams play a doubleheader action. Admission is $5.00 dollars.
Prairie View Athletics will also host other campus events (Baseball, PV Relays, Tennis and Softball), Fans can purchase a $20 ticket to gain access to all athletic events Saturday.
The PV Relays will begin at 8:30 a.m.
