Houston, Texas- The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers basketball team fell to the Texas Southern Lady Tigers 65-45 in the first round of SWAC Tournament action at H&PE Arena on the campus of Texas Southern University.
La'sha Haynes led PVAMU in scoring with 11 points on 4-9 shooting from the floor.
Alexus Parker and
Dominique Newman added nine points apiece.
Following the opening minutes of the contest the score was knotted at four. The Panthers later went on an 8-0 run to take an eight-point advantage with 4:07 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Panthers went cold from the field, allowing Texas Southern to tie the game at 12 as the first quarter concluded.
PVAMU couldn't get back on track offensively early in the second quarter, as the Lady Tigers took advantage going on a 16-0 run to begin the quarter. The Panthers clawed back into the game, outscoring TSU 10-2 with 2:31 left in the first half. Going into the half PVAMU trailed 30-20.
The start of the third quarter saw the Lady Panthers struggling, yet again not knocking down shots. Texas Southern once again capitalized on the Panthers miscues outscoring the Purple and Gold 17-7 in the quarter to take a 47-27 lead into the fourth.
Coach
Ravon Justice spoke after the loss saying "I thought the kids played hard, we had a great start, but got down in a shooting slump, the results are the results. They aren't what we wanted them to be, but they are the results. I am proud of my kids for staying in it and fighting hard."
During the final quarter, PVAMU tried to mount a comeback, but weren't able to cut TSU's lead to less than 16 as the contest came to a close.
