CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Solid pitching and timely hitting were the keys to the Prairie View A&M's University softball team defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 1-0, to begin the afternoon before capturing a 4-2 win in double header action at Chapman Field.
Game 1: PVAMU 1, TAMCC 0
The Lady Panthers struck in the opening frame on some Islanders miscues. Brianna Knowles (1-3) reached base on a fielder's choice. Knowles stole second, before Destinee Williams walked. Both Knowles and D. Williams stole bases with Knowles taking a chance crossing home plate scoring on an error by the catcher.
Ashley Higgins and the Lady Panthers defense shut down Texas A&M Corpus Christi allowing only one hit and no runs. Higgins faced 25 batters striking out four in the complete game win. Both Alyssa Garcia and Daneisha Hinton went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Game 2: PVAMU 4, TAMCC 2
The Islanders jumped on the board in the bottom of the first taking a 2-0 lead over the Lady Panthers. PVAMU struck back in the top of the second as Laurisa Hernandez opened the frame with a homer making the score 2-1.
That is the way the score remained until the sixth inning when D. Williams singled to the shortstop to start a three-run Lady Panthers rally. Kylar Ward-Flowers' bunt single advanced D. Williams to second before Hernandez singled to center field loading the bases with no outs.
Brooke Dibler stepped in to pinch run for Ward-Flowers, before Garcia (2RBI) doubled to center field that scored both Dibler and Williams. Amanda Ford grounded out (RBI) moving Garcia to third and scoring Hernandez to give the Lady Panthers its third run of the inning and putting them ahead 4-2.
Taylor Drury and the Lady Panthers defense kept the Islanders off the board the next inning and a half to seal the victory. Drury posted her first win of the season pitching a complete game allowing only one earned run.
Prairie View A&M softball will return to the diamond Friday, March 10 when they face the University of Houston in a 1 p.m. match up.
