Baseball Takes Two At Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. – The Prairie View A&M University baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader at Grambling, winning 10-0 in seven innings and 7-5 at Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E. Jones Park.
 
The Panthers (12-22, 6-6) won their second Southwestern Athletic Conference series, both on the road, and won the series at Grambling for the first time since 2014.
 
Darrien Williams threw a one-hitter in the opening game win. In the nightcap, the Panthers scored three runs in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie to complete the sweep.
 
Prairie View A&M baseball returns to action Tuesday at Texas State at 6 p.m., with a live radio broadcast on pvpanthers.com.
 
Game 1 – Panthers 10, Grambling St. 0 (7 inn.): Williams took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and 1B Carson Lee went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in the opening game win.
 
Williams walked five and struckout six, but didn't yield a hit until Kristen Franklin's leadoff single.
 
The Panthers scored nine runs over the final four innings. Brashad Jones, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, singled with one out, and then stole second base. Avery Williams singled and Xavier Jefferson reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Lee singled to score Jones, and Tyrone Thomas' two-run single scored both Williams and Jefferson for a 4-0 lead. Thomas also went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
 
Leading 5-0 after five, Prairie View A&M broke the game open with a three-run sixth. Jefferson singled to lead off the inning, and scored on a one-out single by Lee. Thomas then doubled to score Lee. With two outs, Kevin Macais singled to score Thomas for an 8-0 lead.
 
Jefferson and Macais each went 2-for-4 in the season-high tying 16 hit attack.
 
Game 2 – Panthers 7, Grambling St. 5: Four players had two hits as PVAMU rallied for the sweep.
 
Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, Corbin Jamison walked and stole second, and scored on a one-out single by Lee. Following a Thomas single that moved Lee to second, Steven Williams singled to score Lee to tie the score.
 
Prairie View A&M took the lead in eighth. Thomas singled to lead off the inning, and Steven Williams reached on an error. Macais singled to score Thomas to give the Panthers the lead for good at 5-4. With two outs, Avery Williams' single scored S. Williams and Macais for a 7-4 lead.
 
Following a Grambling State run in the ninth, Jordan Foster got the final two outs to earn the save, as Edgar Sanchez earned his second straight win.
