HOUSTON, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Texas Southern, as they took game two 3-1 after falling in game one 7-3.
"I think we played well this weekend, but we just didn't capitalize like we should have in some places," said head coach Vernon Bland. "We should have taken at least two of the three games, but I am glad we are walking away with at least one."
Game 1 TSU 7, PVAMU 3
Texas Southern struck in the bottom of the first with four runs before the Lady Panthers posted two runs in the top of the fourth. Kylar Ward-Flowers led off the inning with a single to center field, followed by another single to left field by Destinee Williams, advancing Ward-Flowers to second. Alyssa Garcia hit a two run double to left center to put PVAMU on the board.
Texas Southern tallied three more runs to take a 7-2 lead over the Lady Panthers. Prairie View A&M was able to score once more with a run in the top of the fifth on a single by Shelby Williams up the middle to lead the inning off for PVAMU. Ward-Flowers hit another single to the left side advancing S. Williams to third, before a throwing error allowed S. Williams to come across the plate.Â
Game 2 PVAMU 3, TSU 1
In the nightcap, a solid performance from Ashley Higgins in the circle secured the win for Prairie View A&M. Higgins went the distance, striking out two batters, for her 11th win of the season.Â
Scoreless after six, in the seventh started with a walk to Ward-Flowers, before D. Williams hit a single to right field advancing Ward-Flowers to second. Natalie McLennan came in to pinch run for Ward Flowers, before A. Garcia singled up the middle advancing each runner.Â
McLennan came across the plate on a throwing error  and D. Williams and A. Garcia both advanced a base on the error. On a sac fly by Laurisa Hernandez,  D. Williams scored to take a 2-0 scoring advantage. On a wild pitch A. Garcia came across the plate to give the Lady Panthers a 3-0 lead.Â
Texas Southern was able to score one run in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.Â
Prairie View A&M will close its regular season out with doubleheader action against Texas A&M Corpus Christi with a 1 p.m. pitch at the PVAMU softball field.
