SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
Avery Williams' pinch-hit triple scored Kevin Macais in the ninth to lift the Prairie View A&M University baseball team to a 6-5 win Wednesday over Texas San Antonio at Roadrunner Field.
Charles Philpott (3-2) pitched 8 1/3 innings, holding UTSA scoreless after the second inning.
Nic Campos, who entered the game with the bases loaded and one out, induced an inning-ending double play to end the game to earn his second save as the PVAMU beat UTSA for the first time in 19 meetings.
Macais, who went 2-for-4, led off the ninth with a single. Following a sacrifice bunt by
Tyrone Thomas, Williams tripled down the right field line on a 2-2 pitch to score Macais.
Prairie View A&M (13-23) jumped out to a fast start in the first. With one out,
Xavier Jefferson reached on an error, and with two outs,
Cody Den Beste was hit by a pitch.
Jalyn Baker's two-run single to right field scored Jefferson and Den Beste. Macais followed with a single through the left side, scoring Baker for a 3-0 lead.
In the second,
Andrew Garcia walked, and
Corbin Jamison singled through the right side and advanced to second on a throwing error as Garcia moved to third.
Xavier Jefferson then doubled down the left field line, scoring both runners for a 5-0 lead.
UTSA (14-14) tied the score with a five-run second. After that, Philpott settled down and got into a groove. He allowed only three hits over the final 6 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out five and pitched into the ninth, setting the stage for the dramatic ending.
After a throwing error allowed the leadoff batter on base, Philpott recorded fifth strikeout. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Campos entered the game. On a 1-1 pitch, he induced the game-ending 4-6-3 double play to seal the win.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday in a 2 p.m. home doubleheader against Arlington Baptist at Tankersley Field.
