NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Prairie View A&M University baseball team saw its 2017 season end in a SWAC Tournament semifinal loss to Alabama State.
 
The Panthers (20-37) advanced to Friday's semifinal with a 4-3 win over Alcorn State earlier in the day before a 25-3 loss to Alabama State Friday night.
 
Panthers 4, Alcorn St. 3: Charles Philpott (5-2) earned the win on the mound, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, walking two, and striking out three.  Jordan Johnson had two big innings of hitless, scoreless relief before Nic Campos ended the Alcorn State rally, getting the final two outs with runners on second and third to end the game.
 
Cody Den Beste went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. His first-inning double scored Avery Williams, who walked to lead off the game to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
 
PVAMU added a run in the second inning as Kevin Macias scored on a two-out error, and in the third as Den Beste scored on a wild pitch.
 
In the fifth, Den Beste led off with a double and scored on Steven Williams' single to right field. Alcorn State scored three runs in the sixth as the Panthers' bullpen sealed the victory.
 
Alabama St. 25, Panthers 3: A pair of big innings by the Hornets broke the game open.
 
Den Beste went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Panthers, who scored a pair of runs in the second on several Alabama State errors.
 
Prairie View A&M added a run in the fifth on a triple by Steven Williams, scoring Den Beste.
