PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's and men's tennis team will open its 2018 season this weekend.
The women's team will open at Texas A&M on Saturday, with the first serve at 4 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
"This will be a tough match for us right out the gate," said head PVAMU Tennis Coach Duane Williams. "This will give us an opportunity to see where we are after the break."
The Aggies are 2-0 all-time against Prairie View A&M. The teams met for the first time last season in a doubleheader match at the Mitchell Tennis Center. TAMU defeated the Panthers 7-0 and 4-0 on April 9, 2017.
The women's tennis team finished the season 4-4 in conference action. Shaddae Findley was selected to the All-SWAC First Team, after posting an 11-11 overall record and a 5-1 mark in conference play.
The team posted wins over non-conference opponents Texas Permain Basin (6-1) and Newman (5-2), while also picking up wins over conference foes Arkansas Pine Bluff (4-0), Alabama A&M (3-2) Grambling State (4-3) and Mississippi Valley (4-0).
The fifth seeded Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers fell in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 SWAC Championship to fourth seed Southern University 4-0.
The men's team will travel to face Rice on Sunday starting at 4 p.m. at the George R. Brown Tennis Center. The match can be watched on pvpanthers.com.
The men's tennis team finished tied for third place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference during the 2017 season
The team finished the season 3-3 in conference play, posting wins over conference opponents Arkansas Pine Bluff (4-0), Alabama A&M (4-3), Mississippi Valley (5-0) and non-conference team Our Lady of the Lake (6-3)
The Panthers entered the SWAC Tournament as the fourth seed and won their quarterfinal match by after defeating fifth-seed Alabama A&M 4-2. PVAMU loss to eventual champion Alabama State in the semifinals.
Xavier Lawrence earned SWAC Freshman of the Year honors. Earning second Team All-Conference honors were junior Ulrick Boyogueno (3-5), and freshman Zach Suico (6-4). Lawrence was recently named to the Davis Cup team in his home country of Barbados.
Junior Anirudh Yadav (6-15) were selected to the Second Team All-SWAC in Doubles along with Boyogueno and Lawrence (7-11).
