Women's Basketball Hold Off UAPB

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –  The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team picked up a 64-52 conference win over UAPB Saturday afternoon at the William J. Nicks Arena.

Talisha Presley led the Lady Panthers in scoring with a career high of 17 points in 36 minutes of action. Alexis Robinson tallied 14 points, and was a perfect 5-5 from the field. Kendra Hicks registered her first double-double of the season, with 11 points and 11 rebounds in just 13 minutes of play.  She posted a career high in rebounds.

The first quarter was filled with suffocating defense being played by both teams, as there was a scoring drought that lasted nearly four minutes during the opening quarter. Neither the Lady Golden Lions or Lady Panthers shot better than 35 percent from the field. A pair of Hicks jump shots gave the Purple and Gold a 10-6 lead with less than one minute remaining in the first frame. As the first quarter concluded PVAMU held a 10-8 advantage.

The Lady Panthers broke fast out of the gates to begin the second frame, outscoring UAPB 7-2 in the opening three minutes of the quarter. The scoring spurt was keyed by timely baskets by Presley and Shala Dobbins. PVAMU continued to play tight defense to finish the first half, allowing UAPB to score just 11 points on 29 percent shooting from the floor.  Conversely, the Lady Panthers shot 53 percent from the field and tallied eight assists to close the first half in possession of an 11-point lead, going into halftime with a 30-19 advantage.

The second half began with UAPB outscoring PVAMU 10-4 in the opening minutes of the third quarter, to cut the Lady Panther advantage to 34-29.  The Purple and Gold struggled from the field during the quarter, shooting a mere 28.6 percent from the floor on 6-21 shooting.  However, the Lady Panthers got well timed baskets from Presley, Robinson and Dominique Newman, which allowed the Prairie View to regain a double digit lead with less than 60 seconds left in the third. At the close of the quarter, PVAMU led 45-37.

The final stanza began with both teams exchanging baskets, however Prairie View A&M would pull away as the game came to a close, leading by more than a dozen points with less than five minutes to play. Arkansas-Pine Bluff would cut the PVAMU advantage to nine with 2:27 left to play. But it was the Lady Panthers that put away the Golden Lions for good with converted free throws and other high percentage field goal attempts from Newman, Presley and La'Neique Nealey.

The Lady Panthers return to action on Monday, January 22nd as they take on Mississippi Valley at the William J. Nicks Arena for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.
