PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – When junior
Jaylan Thomas stepped in to serve for Prairie View A&M in the fourth set it looked as though the fifth set was looming as Cetara Carter's big block sealed the deal for the Lady Panthers to take the match 3-1 over Southern.
"This was a huge win for us compared to last night," head PVAMU volleyball coach
TaCho Tyler said. "We made some big blocks and we came out with a sense of urgency especially from our offense. Our defense and setters have been carrying us all season and we needed our offense to match that. Hopefully this will be a turning point."
Along with her solid performance in the closing moments of the match, Carter was just as effective throughout the match, notching a season high 13 kills, which included at least four kills in every set.
Thomas also made an impact on the PVAMU offense, chipping in with a total of 12 kills, all of which came in the final three sets.
While Carter and Thomas led the PV offense, it was
Kaelyn Yeoman who led the Lady Panthers on defense as she recorded six blocks.
Yeoman was joined by two other Lady Panthers that put up a consistent wall against the Jaguars attackers. Senior
Latrice Brown and junior
Melissa Bento in her debut as a Lady Panther had three blocks a piece.
Junior
Alyssa Cataldo also made her presence felt as she dished out a match-high 22 assists. Senior
Christen Augustine posted a match-high 14 digs.
The Lady Panthers will head over to Houston to face rival Texas Southern on Thursday, Oct. 4 for a 6:30 first set.
