Soccer to Host a Pair of Crucial Matches in Home stand Finale

10/4/2018 3:09:00 PM

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M soccer team will face another pair of challenges this weekend, facing defending SWAC Champion Alabama State on Friday night at 7 p.m., before hosting Alabama A&M for a final home tilt on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Both games will be played at PVAMU Soccer Field, with live video streaming at pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork.

The Lady Panthers (1-1-1 SWAC) won 1-0 Sunday against Jackson State and will look to keep the momentum rolling in a crucial two-game home stand this weekend as they hit the midway mark of SWAC play this weekend.

"Hopefully we will be able to carry our momentum into this weekend after Sunday's win," said head PVAMU soccer coach Sonia Curvelo.  "We are going to have put in a lot of defensive efforts against these two teams.  Both of them have 4-0 records in conference play.  We are one of a few teams in the league that has allowed only one goal in four games, so we've done really well defensively. The key to winning is to finish our chances. We are a team that is averaging less than 10 shots per game.  We need to just do a better job with protecting the goal and our players are aware of how important both these matches are."

PVAMU is led offensively by junior Blair Lane, who missed the first half of the season due to injury.  Since her return, she has three goals on the season with six points and has taken 14 shots with nine on goal.  Freshman goal keeper Quinn Josiah is second in the conference with 86 saves (7.82 per contest), with three shutouts this season.

Alabama State comes into Friday's game with a 4-6 overall record and 4-0 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.  The Lady Hornets posted wins over conference opponents Mississippi Valley (2-0) and Alcorn State (10-0) this past weekend.  The Lady Hornets are led offensively by Birgit Rijnders with six goals on the season.

Alabama A&M owns a 4-6-1 overall record and has a 4-0 mark in conference play and will play at Texas Southern on Friday before visiting Prairie View on Sunday.  The Lady Bulldogs are coming off wins over Alcorn (2-0) and Mississippi Valley State (5-2).  AAMU is led offensively by Ayanna Gooden, she has five goals and three assists on the season.
