Volleyball Takes Care of Business At Home For Senior Night

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Behind sophomore Tamaira Armstrong's strong performance, the Prairie View A&M volleyball team downed the Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions in a four-set thriller on senior night at the PVAMU Recreation Center Monday night.

PVAMU won by the scores of 15-25, 30-28, 25-17, 25-23.

"Another win for us and I just love it," head PVAMU volleyball coach TaCho Tyler exclaimed! "It was really exciting to watch Tamaira play tonight.  We had hoped for her to peak all season, and she has come a long the way we wanted her to in the last two matches we've played.  We are happy to see the player that we recruited come alive and she has been amazing, even in the TSU game last Thursday."

The first set opened with the Lady Golden Lions controlling the set from beginning to end, not giving up their lead or tying the set not one time as they took the first set 25-15.

The second set was a lot different as the teams went back-and-forth to the very end.  The set saw eight ties and five lead changes, but it was the Lady Panthers that came out on top with a 30-28 second set win.

The third set began much like the second, with PVAMU controlling the pace holding a 15-10 lead.  The Lady Panthers outscored UAPB the rest of the way to take the set 25-17.

The third set was another back-and-fourth contest as both teams were tied only twice in the beginning of the set. A Lady Panther attack by Armstrong iced the match for PVAMU 25-23.

Armstrong paced the Lady Panthers offense with 21 kills, while hitting .364.  Three other PVAMU players were in double digit figures.  Senior Latrice Brown and sophomore Victoria Pearson had 12 kills apiece, while junior Cetara Carter added 11 kills.

Freshman Jaelyn Phillips-Oakes dished out a career high 28 assists, while junior Erica Jimenez added 23.  Armstrong also posted her second double-double with 17 digs.  Senior libero Christen Augustine led the team on defense with 23 digs in the match, while Oakes posted a career high of 11, and earning her first double-double of the season.

The two seniors that were honored were Brown and Augustine.  Augustine was also honored with a plaque and a volleyball for becoming the PVAMU's all-time leader in digs.  The former all-time leader in digs Shannon Harrison was also presented a plaque and volleyball.

"We are going to miss these two young ladies," Tyler said.  "Chrissy has been with me since I've been here, and she has been the heart and soul of our defense as you can see.  I am proud of both of these young ladies especially how they played in front of the home crowd on their night."

The team will return to action on Friday, Nov. 16 when they face either #2 seed Alabama State or #1 seed Alabama A&M in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament in Itta Bena, Miss.
