PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team won their home season opener 117-32 against Jarvis Christian College, Friday night in the New Rec Center.
The team dominated all four quarters with their overwhelming speed and intensity.
Head Coach
Sandy Pugh said while the team played hard, jitters were apparent and shown through mistakes the team may have made throughout the game.
"I thought we came out with a lot of energy," said Pugh. "I think we had a lot of butterflies, and that was obvious with layups and other things we missed. The speed was there and the intensity was there, we just have to do a better job of finishing and executing."
Both teams came out playing fast in the first quarter, but the Panther's pulled ahead for their first lead of the game at 6-4. They pushed their lead 11-5 with 3:10 left in the first before going on a 17-0 run to end the quarter.
The Lady Panthers were in control throughout the second quarter as they went on a 21-0 run and led 48-5. PVAMU went into the half leading 55-13, with senior guard
Shala Dobbins leading the team with 12 points.
PV continued their fast play into the third quarter as they opened on a 10-0 run, leading 65-13. The team's fast play and intensity was shown once again as they dominated throughout the quarter. The Lady Panthers closed out the quarter with a 92-21 lead after a made three-pointer by junior guard
Dominique Newman.
The fourth quarter was nothing different, as PVAMU continued to lengthen their lead. The Panther's gathered their largest lead of the game at 85 points as they ended the game 117-32.
Newman lead the team with 21 points, three assists and six steals. Dobbins followed with 16 points, three assists, one block and two steals, while senior forward
La'Neique Nealey chipped in 14 points, four assists, and one block, adding three steals.
Getting ready for their next matchup, Pugh said the team needs to focus on improving their defense.
"We have to work on our defensive execution, "Pugh said. "We have to be able to pressure up front, and we have to be able to double-down on bigs. We have to hit the boards. We can't give up [offensive] boards and think we're going to be in the ballgame."
The Panther's return to action on Thursday, Nov. 15 in Stillwater, Oklahoma against Oklahoma State University.
