COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The road has not been particularly friendly to the Prairie View A&M's women's basketball team thus far this season, as the Panthers misfortune continued on Friday evening as they fell to #23 ranked Texas A&M 70-57, at the Reed Arena.
Â
"We shot the ball and executed in the half court well up to the fourth quarter," said head PVAMU women's basketball coach
Sandy Pugh. "Foul trouble with our key players became a factor, when they (Texas A&M) shot 42 free throws to 13. You will get beat every time if the foul chart is the lopsided. For three quarters we were happy with our team's efforts. We will build on this performance, and are looking forward to conference play."
Â
PVAMU and TAMU tied four times in the first quarter, before pulling away with an 18-13 lead with 0:17 left in the period.
Â
The Panthers came out strong in the second quarter, going into the half with a 37-29 lead after a made jumper by junior forward
Mariah Campbell with 0:30 left in the quarter. Junior guard
Dominique Newman led the team with 11 points.
Â
The team was able to keep their lead throughout the third quarter, but had it cut short as PVAMU went into the fourth leading 53-48.
Â
They were able to hold onto their lead until TAMU went on a late run in the final minutes of the game, with PVAMU eventually falling 70-57.
Â
Newman led the team with 14 points, five assists, four rebounds and one steal. Senior center
Artavia Ford followed behind with 13 points, three blocks, three steals, two assists and two rebounds. Campbell also contributed with a season high eight points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
