SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Kansas past Prairie View A&M softball team 2-1 in the afternoon game at the UTSA Softball Classic. The Lady Panthers dropped the opening game to Missouri St. 4-3 at the Roadrunner Field.
Game One
Missouri 4, PVAMU 3
Missouri State scored the first run in the opening frame on a single up the middle.
The Lady Panthers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Laurisa Hernandez singled, before Destinee Williams reached base on a walk, advancing Hernandez to second. On a wild pitch both ladies took a base advancing Hernandez to third and placing D. Williams on second. Amanda Ford's single up the middle scored both Hernandez and D. Williams, before the frame was ended.
The Lady Panthers posted a third run in the top of third inning. Keona Hunter opened the third with a single to left field, before Shelby Williams reached base on a fielder's choice and Hunter advancing to second. With one out and two runners on base, Alyssa Garcia reached base on a fielder's choice, but this time Hunter was out at third. With two outs Kylar Ward-Flowers reached base on an era, scoring S. Williams and advancing Garcia to second giving the Lady Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
Missouri scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.
Game two
Kansas 2, PVAMU 1
In the second game, Vannessa Castro allowed just three hits, walking only two batters, while striking out for the Lady Panthers.
After four scoreless innings, the Lady Panthers got on the board first in the fifth frame. Garcia opened the inning with a homer to left field to give PVAMU a 1-0 advantage.
The Jayhawks scored in the bottom of the seventh to tie and extend the game to an eighth inning. The Lady Panthers had base runners on second and first, but couldn't get anyone across the plate. Kansas scored in the bottom of the eighth on a single to take the win.
The Lady Panthers return to action Saturday facing Lamar at 9 a.m. and face host team UTSA at 4:30 p.m.
