Men's Basketball Hold Off Golden Lions In Overtime

Pine Bluff, Arkansas – The Prairie View A&M University men's basketball team defeated UAPB 76-71 in overtime at the H.O. Clemmons Arena, Saturday night.

 All five PVAMU starters were in double figures in scoring as Gary Blackston tallied 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Dennis Jones added 17 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, Zachary Hamilton scored 11 points in 23 minutes of action, Troy Thompson added 11 points of 40 percent shooting from the floor. J.D. Wallace chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds in 40 minutes.
 
The two squads traded the lead as the game began, a Jones layup with 16:24 left in the first half gave PVAMU a 7-6 lead. Later in the quarter Jones nailed a three pointer to give the Panthers a five point advantage.  Prairie View remained in control in the pursuing minutes, however UAPB took the lead with 5:37 remaining in the opening half of play. The Panthers finished the half strong, outscoring UAPB 10-3 in the final 5:37 of the half. The Purple and Gold run was keyed by baskets from Thompson, Wallace, Jones and Blackston.  Prairie View led 36-30 at the half.
 
The game remained a back and forth affair, with the teams trading baskets as the final 20 minutes of the game began. The Panthers were in possession of a 41-38 lead after Thompson nailed a jumper from beyond the three point arc with 15:31 remaining.  PVAMU held the lead in the following minutes, however the Golden Lions stayed in striking distance trailing by just three with less than eight minutes to go. Arkansas- Pine Bluff later took a slim one point lead with 5:37 left in regulation.

However, the Panthers responded regaining the lead on a Thompson three pointer that found the bottom of the net.
  UAPB tied the game with 33 seconds remaining in the game.  Hamilton silenced the crowd burying a jumper with four seconds left on the game clock to give PVAMU a 64-62 advantage. The Golden Lions tied the game on a layup with one second remaining to send the contest into overtime knotting the score at 64.

 
During the extra session, the game remained close with neither team leading by more than four points. A clutch three pointer from Thompson in the right corner gave Prairie View a 72-68 lead with 1:53 remaining in the overtime period. The Golden Lions cut the lead to one with 1:19 on the clock. PVAMU put the game away courtesy of a dunk from Wallace and a pair of converted free throw attempts from Blackston sealed the win for the Panthers.
 
PVAMU will return to action on Monday evening to take on Mississippi Valley in Itta Bena, Miss., in SWAC action. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
