The Prairie A&M University women's basketball team was victorious on Saturday afternoon beating Alabama State 69-63 at the William J. Nicks Building on Saturday afternoon.

Shala Dobbins led all scorers with 20 points on 5 of 14 shooting from the floor.
Dominique Newman tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and four steals.Â
Talisha Presley added 14 points and three rebounds in 39 minutes of game action.

The teams traded baskets and the lead during the opening minutes of play. A
Dominique Newman layup with 3:21 to go in the first gave PVAMU a 12-9 advantage. The Lady Panthers outscored ASU 7-5 to close out the quarter with a 19-14 lead. The strong finish the quarter was keyed by baskets from Presley,
Jhyrah Cobb, and Dobbins. Prairie View shot 43 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the three-point arc during the first 10 minutes of action.

Prairie View started the second quarter off strong, scoring five quick points punctuated by a Newman three pointer to give the Lady Panthers a 24-14 lead with 7:44 to go in the half. PV continued to play well and led by as many as 13 in the quarter. With less than three minutes to go in the half PVAMU led 34-21 after a pair of converted
Shala Dobbins free throws. Alabama State would cut in to the PV lead, going on an 8-2 run to close out the first half. As halftime began Prairie View led 36-29.

The Lady Panthers broke slow out of the gates to begin the third quarter, missing their first four shots. The sluggish start allowed the Lady Hornets to cut the PV advantage to one-point with less than nine minutes left in the third period. Prairie View would respond outscoring ASU 18-6 in the following 7 minutes of play. The run was keyed by baskets from Presley, Newman, Dobbins, and Cobb. With 1:20 left in the quarter the Purple and Gold led 53-42. As the fourth quarter was set to begin the Lady Panthers led 55-45.

The teams traded baskets during the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Panthers still lead by as many as eight midway through the quarter. With 6:33 left to go in the contest PVAMU led 61-53. ASU clawed back into the game in the following minutes, eventually cutting the lead to 66-63 with a minute to go in regulation. The Lady Panthers buckled down defensively in the final minutes, and a pair of converted Dobbins free throws put the game away for the Lady Panthers.

PVAMU will return to the hardwood on Monday February 26
th at the William J. Nicks Building to take on Alabama A&M. Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm.
