PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Prairie View A&M softball team split a mid-week home opener double-header with Northwestern State, falling 8-1 in game one, bouncing back with a 4-2 win in the second contest.
GAME 1
Northwestern St. 8, PVAMU 1
The Lady Demons opened up with a fast start with four runs in the first inning of play. Prairie View starter
Vannessa Castro settled down a bit over the next couple innings, but Prairie View struggled to get going offensively.
The Lady Panthers showed some life in the fourth when
Laurisa Hernandez hit her second homer of the season out the park in right center field, but the Lady Demons responded with two runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh, picking up the win from there.
Castro allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings of work, receiving the loss on her ledger. Both
Daneisha Hinton and
Kylar Ward-Flowers also had a hit for Prairie View.
GAME 2
PVAMU 4, Northwestern St. 2
Prairie View quickly jumped on the Lady Demons, as the Lady Panthers picked up four runs.
Shelby Williams opened the game with a single to second base. Hinton slapped a double to right center that scoring S. Williams, and Hernandez blasted a two-run shot to left center giving her the homer of the season. The Lady Panthers carried their momentum to the next frame as
Brianna Grays delivered a RBI single to plate
Amanda Ford.
From there, Prairie View A&M starter
Ashley Higgins put the clamps on the Lady Demons offense for much of the way until Northwestern State sparked the offense with a solo homer in the fifth and picking up a RBI single in the sixth to cut into Prairie View's lead (4-2). Higgins managed to work out of a two-out jam with two on, getting a force out at second to end the frame.
That was all the Lady Demons would muster, as Higgins dealt a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the complete game win. She scattered hits over seven innings of work.
The Lady Panthers will return to play when they head to Houston to face Houston Baptist March 3rd with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
