PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M softball team split a doubleheader with Alabama State on Saturday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Field, losing the first game 6-5, and winning game number two 11-6.

The Lady Panthers started strong, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.Â
Keona Hunter was the first Lady Panther to score as
Alyssa Garcia walked with the bases loaded to bring Hunter in from third. Laurissa Hernandez would single up the middle, which allowed
Destinee Williams to score.
Amanda Ford walked in the subsequent at bat with the bases fully loaded, scoring
Kelsey Coronado from third base with the Lady Panthers holding a three run advantage.

ASU responded scoring five runs on two hits in the top half of the second. The Lady Panthers scored during their half of the inning, tallying one run on a trio of hits. Hunter singled into right field. D. Williams doubled to center field allowing Hunter to advance to third. In the next at bat Coronado singled to left field bringing Hunter across the plate. After two innings the Lady Panthers trailed Alabama State 5-4.

The squads failed to score in the following four innings, but ASU got back on the board during the top of the sixth inning scoring one run on one base hit. PVAMU responded, scoring one run. Coronado led off the inning with a double to left center field. Two at bats later Garcia grounded out, but pinch runner
Samantha Martinez crossed home plate to cut the ASU lead to 6-5. At the end of six, PVAMU trailed by only one run.

After keeping the Lady Hornets off the board in the top of the seventh, Hunter walked, stealing second to lead off the PV half of the inning. Hunter advanced to third on passed ball. In an attempt to score the tying run, Hunter was caught attempting to steal home to conclude the contest, with ASU coming out on top.

Game two

The opening two innings of game number two produced no scores at the PVAMU Softball Complex. The Lady Panthers broke through in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on a pair of hits. Hernandez began the inning, singling up the middle.Â
Gabrielle Fonseca reached first on a fielder's choice as Hernandez was out at second base. Fonseca stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch after
Kylar Ward-Flowers was hit by a pitch.Â
Amanda Ford walked on the following at bat advancing Ward-Flowers to second base. Garcia would single to right field and cleared the bases as all three base runners scored. At the end of two, PVAMU led 3-0.

ASU got on the board, tallying two runs of a trio of hits in the top of the third. The Lady Panthers were unable to get going in the bottom of the inning, going three up three down. At the end of three PVAMU led 3-2.

Alabama State took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits. PVAMU responded tallying three runs on a trio of hits in their half of the inning. Fonseca singled to third, later stealing second. Ford singled to right field, allowing Fonseca to advance to third.Â
Day'Zjah Pennywell singled up the middle bringing home Fonseca and allowing pinch runner
Samantha Martinez to advance to third. Garcia reached base on the following at bat thanks to an ASU error that allowed Martinez and Pennywell to score. At the end of four innings the game was tied at 6-6.

To start the bottom of the fifth Hernandez singled to the shortstop, as Fonseca reached base on an error, advancing Hernandez to second. Ward-Flowers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ford was walked, which allowed pinch runner
Kellady Johnson to score. Pennywell tripled to right field clearing the bases to give the Lady Panthers a 10-6 advantage.

PVAMU kept ASU off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. The Lady Panthers added to their lead tallying one run. Coronado singled up the middle to start the inning. Hernandez reached first base on a fielder's choice. Fonseca singled to third, advancing Hernandez to second, both players moved around each taking their bases respectively on a wild pitch. Ward-Flowers singled to center field, which allowed Hernandez to score. At the end of six innings, Prairie View A&M led 11-6.

The Lady Panthers closed out the Lady Hornets in the top of the seventh inning to split Saturday's double header.

The Lady Panthers return to action on Wednesday at 1 pm in a doubleheader against Jarvis Christian University at the PVAMU Softball Field.
