Softball Sweeps Southern in SWAC Doubleheader Action

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M softball team edged by Southern in doubleheader action on Friday.  The Lady Panthers took game one 3-2, and won 8-7 in the nightcap.
                                                                                                   
Game 1
PVAMU 3, SU 2
 
Shelby Williams led off the game with a single, stretching it to second on the throw for the Lady Panthers. After S. Williams moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Keona Hunter, Destinee Williams managed to bring the leadoff hitter home with a RBI sac fly.

In the second, PVAMU added to the lead as Laurisa Hernandez singled, but reached second on a fielding error by the Lady Jaguars. Amanda Ford moved Hernandez to third with a sac bunt. After Day'Zjah Pennywell drew a walk, Alexis Freeman smacked a double to left center to plate Hernandez.

Southern tied the game on a couple of homers. The contest proceeded to extra innings, where PVAMU won it via a walk-off RBI single from Kelsey Coronado that brought in Gabriela Fonseca.

Although Crystal Castillo went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs for PVAMU. Vannessa Castro owned the win with 2.2 relief innings of no-hit ball.
 
Game 2
PVAMU 8, SU 7
In game two, neither side got going until the third inning, where the Lady Panthers pounced on costly Jaguar errors to post a five-run frame. Two PVAMU runs were due to miscues in the field by Southern.

In the fourth, the Jaguars cut the deficit to one during a fielder's choice, and two Jags hitting RBI doubles, scoring two runs. Southern took a 6-5 lead with a two-run blast in the fifth, another RBI single was added in the sixth.
Down 7-5 in the final inning, Hernandez hit a RBI single to bring Prairie View within one, and Alyssa Garcia won it during a RBI single where the ensuing throw-in was airmailed, allowing D. Williams to score the winning run.

Hernandez and Garcia each had three hits.

The Lady Panthers will return to action when they host Grambling State for a three game series starting Friday, April 13 with the first pitch beginning a 3 p.m.  They will continue you play with doubleheader action on Saturday, April 14 with the first game starting an noon.
