Softball Tops Grambling in SWAC Doubleheader Action; Bland Earns 100th Career Win

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Prairie View A&M softball team defeated Grambling State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the PVAMU Softball Complex winning 3-0 in game one and 9-1 in the night cap.
 
The two wins today earned head coach Vernon Bland his 100th career win as the coach for the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers.
 
Game One
PVAMU 3, GSU 0
 
Kelsey Coronado scored the first run of the contest for the Lady Panthers on an Amanda Ford's groundout in the bottom half of the second inning giving PVAMU a 1-0 lead. The Lady Panthers got back on the board in the third with one run on one hit.
 
Keona Hunter singled to second base, then stole second and third, before scoring on a wild pitch. After three innings PV led 2-0.  The Lady Panthers added one final run in the bottom of the fourth on one hit. Laurisa Hernandez was hit by a pitch advancing to second base on a Kylar Ward Flowers groundout. Hernandez scored from second as Ford doubled down the left field line to make the score 3-0.  The Lady Panthers pitching closed the game allowing only one hit in the final three innings to give PVAMU the victory.
 
 
Game Two
PVAMU 9, GSU 1
 
Grambling scored one run on two hits in the top half of the first to make the score 1-0.  The Lady Panthers responded scoring two runs on one hit.
 
Alexis Freeman walked, stealing second base to put herself in scoring position. Gabrielle Fonseca doubled in the next at bat, allowing Freeman to score. Fonseca advanced to third base on the throw. Fonseca scored on a groundout from Coronado to make the score 2-1. 
 
PVAMU got back on the board in the second inning scoring three runs on three hits. Shelby Williams singled up the middle and stole second and third base. Keona Hunter walked on a full count and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Freeman singled and S. Williams scored from third.
In her next at bat Fonseca singled, allowing Freeman to advance to third and Hunter to cross home plate advancing the score 4-1. Freeman scored on a wild pitch in the following at bat giving PVAMU a 5-1 advantage at the end of the second inning.
 
The Lady Panthers added four more runs to their lead in the fourth inning, tallying four hits in their half of the inning. Freeman got on base with a bunt, stealing second. Freeman advanced to third on a Fonseca single up the middle, which allowed her to score on a throwing error in the subsequent at bat.
 
Hernandez singled into left field, which allowed Fonseca to score from third base. Pinch runner Kellady Johnson scored on a fly out from Alyssa Garcia to left field to make the score 8-1. 
 
The Lady Panthers added one final run in the bottom of the fifth and the umpires called the game after five innings, citing PVAMU's eight run lead after five full innings of play.
 
The Lady Panthers return to the field on Sunday, April 15th to conclude their three game series against Grambling State. The First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
