Lady Panther Softball Takes Game One Against TSU Friday

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M softball team defeated rival Texas Southern 8-2 in the first of the three game series on Friday evening at the PVAMU Softball Complex.
 
Laurisa Hernandez was 3-5 at the plate and had five runs batted in to include her fourth homerun of the year. Gabrielle Fonseca was 2-4 on the day with two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored.
 
Prairie View got off to an early start, striking first in the bottom of the first frame with three runs on three hits. Fonseca reached base on a fielder's choice, while Kelsey Coronado singled to right center field, advancing Fonseca to third base.  Hernandez tripled to right field, allowing Fonseca and Coronado to score.  Kylar Ward-Flowers doubled to right center bringing Hernandez across home plate from third.  PVAMU led 3-0 going into the top of the second.
 
Texas Southern scored one run on one hit in the top of the second inning, before Prairie View struck again scoring two runs on two hits in their half of the second inning. Day'Zjah Pennywell singled to centerfield, advancing to second base on the following at bat due to a groundout.  Shelby Williams singled putting runners on the corners with one out. Williams stole second to put two runners in scoring position for the Lady Panthers. Fonseca singled to center field bringing home both Pennywell and Williams to advance the score 5-1.
 
The Lady Tigers scored one their final run in the top of the third to make the score 5-2. The Lady Panthers concluded the scoring on the day in their half of the fourth scoring three runs on three hits. Fonseca singled down the left field line, before Coronado singled up the middle putting two runners on base with no outs. Hernandez hit a three run homer to put the game out of reach for the Lady Tigers.
 
The Lady Panther softball team will return to action tomorrow for a double header against Texas Southern, with the first pitch of game one set for noon, on senior day.
