MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Prairie View A&M softball team advances to the next round of the 2018 SWAC Softball Tournament Friday morning after defeating Alabama A&M 11-2 in five innings.
The Lady Panthers will play again Friday at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of Arkansas Pine Bluff and Southern.
Second baseman
Destinee Williams hit a one-out single to the shortstop, in the top of the third, before Gabriella Fonseca and
Laurisa Hernandez walked to load the bases.
Kylar Ward-Flowers crushed the ball to centerfield for a single scoring both Williams and Fonseca, and Hernandez moved to third on a miscue by the catcher.
Amanda Ford followed up with a single to right center, scoring Hernandez to advance the lead 3-0.
The second inning was key for the Lady Panthers as they loaded the bases, first with
Shelby Williams singling on a bunt to third base. Another miscue by the Bulldogs assisted
Keona Hunter with a base and then stole second to put PVAMU in scoring position. Both Fonseca and
Kelsey Coronado walked to load the bases for Hernandez, who belted a grand slam at the next at-bat to left center field to advance the score 8-2.
The Lady Panthers capitalized on mistakes by the Lady Bulldogs to put up three more runs in the top of the fourth, starting with Coronado's single to right field. Ward-Flowers reached base on a fielder's choice and advancing to second as Coronado came around to score after a throwing error by the pitcher and another error by the centerfielder.
Alexis Freeman singled up the middle for an RBI scoring Ward-Flowers. S. Williams reached base on a throwing error as Freeman came across the plate to score the final run of the inning for the Lady Panthers.
