NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Prairie View A&M baseball team fell to Alabama State 4-2 in a SWAC Tournament elimination game Wesley Barrow Stadium that featured two weather delays that extended Friday's 12:15 p.m. game into a Saturday morning finish.
Trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Panthers took the lead in the third inning.
Tyler Gordon led off with a walk, and moved to second on a
Daniel Lingua single through the right side. Following a sacrifice bunt to
Ezekiel Bear advancing the runners, and a groundout,
Avery Williams singled through the left side to give Prairie View A&M a 2-1 lead.
Alabama State tied the game in the fifth inning, prior to the weather impacting the game.
The first lightning delay came in the 7
th inning with the score tied at 2-2, halting play for about 45 minutes. Just after Alabama State regained the lead in the eighth, the game was delayed around 3:45 p.m., with rains starting around 4:45 that lasted until well after 8 p.m.
Saturday following a 9 a.m. resumption of the contest, the Hornets added an additional insurance run for the final margin.
Xavier Jefferson went 4-for-5, and S. Williams went 2-for-4 in the contest. Pitchers
Derrick Curry,
Lorenzo Hardit, and
Cristian Cooper limited Alabama State to only six hits.
