PVAMU Sports Hall Of Famer Hornsby Dies

Prairie View A&M Sports Hall of Famer Gentris Hornsby passed away last week at the age of 80.
 
Hornsby was a three-time Pittsburgh Courier All-American as an offensive guard for the PVAMU football team. He earned honors in 1957, 1958, and 1959, and helped the Panthers to win both the SWAC and HBCU National Championship in 1958. He was inducted into the PVAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
 
Hornsby was captain of the 1954 Wheatley Lions team that won a district championship and advanced to the Prairie View Interscholastic League state semifinals.
 
Following his Prairie View A&M career, Hornsby was drafted by both the Dallas Texans and Green Bay Packers in 1959.Hornsby went on to become a teacher and coach for 26 years in the San Antonio ISD before retiring in 1995.
 
Visitation is today from 4 – 8 p.m. at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 3062 MLK Drive, San Antonio, Texas. The Omega Psi Phi service is at the same location tonight at 6:30 p.m.
 
The funeral service will be held Saturday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, with interment in Madisonville, Texas.
