PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – After capturing their first win of the season Sunday, the Prairie View A&M women's soccer team will look to continue their success at home in this weekend's action against Houston Baptist and Texas State.
This weekend will present a pair of challenges in the form of Houston Baptist on Friday night at 7 p.m., before hosting Texas State for a home tilt on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at PVAMU Soccer Field, with live video streaming at pvpanthers.com/sportsnetwork.
"We know we are at a learning curve and that we have some things that we have to improve on going into the weekend," head PVAMU soccer coach
Sonia Curvelo said. "We have some things to work on as far as the defensive side and the attacking area. We obviously want to be able to score more goals to win games. The attitude of the girls is great. We realize that a little bit extra will get us over the hump as we prepare for conference play."
Defensively, Prairie View has looked sharp in their last few clashes, thanks in large part by the play of its freshman goalkeeper
Quinn Josiah. The New Market, Canadian Josiah leads the team and conference with 35 saves. In the win against Nicholls, she had nine.
The Lady Panthers lone score on the young season came from sophomore Jojo Bernal on Sunday in overtime to win the game at Nicholls.
Houston Baptist has gotten off to a 1-2 start, losing to both Grand Canyon (1-0) and Arizona (6-0) over the weekend.
"I know that PVAMU has faced the Huskies before," said Curvelo. "I've never faced them before, so I see this as a great opportunity for all of us. This will be a challenge for us, but to play big teams like this will push us out of our comfort zone."
As far as the Bobcats are concerned, the team will host the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday and will have an opportunity to improve on their 1-3 record before facing the Lady Panthers. Texas State fell to LSU 2-0 in their last contest.
"Texas State is another team that I as a coach have never faced," Curvelo said. "This is a team that's going to be a challenge to us as well. It's definitely going to be a great matchup. Playing these teams will most definitely put us in a good situation for SWAC play. This will give us chance to work and develop on some things before we go into SWAC."
