Soccer Comeback Falls Short at St. Thomas

9/11/2018 12:30:00 AM

BOX SCORE HOUSTON – The Prairie View soccer team fell short in its comeback attempt in a 4-3 loss to St. Thomas Monday night at the Houston Sports Park.

The Lady Panthers and Celts were even on the shots with 12 apiece.   The Celts opened the game with a quick goal early in the first half with just seven minutes off the clock to lead the Lady Panthers 1-0.  UST quickly scored another goal at the 10-minute mark off of a penalty kick.  St. Thomas scored their final goal of the first half at the 29th minute mark to take a 3-0 advantage.

A quick response by Blair Lane, who scored her first goal of the season in the final minutes of the first half (39th minute) to put the Lady Panthers on the board (3-1).   Junior Mila Bustos closed out the half with her first goal of the season at the 42nd minute mark. The Lady Panthers were down 3-2 going into the half.

UST scored again at the 62nd minute to take a 4-2.  In the final minutes (87th) junior Diana Neff was able to pooch a kick to the right bottom of the net to make the score 4-3, but there wasn't enough time left on the clock before the Lady Panthers could find another window of opportunity to score again.

Freshman goalkeeper Quinn Josiah added five more saves to her already impressive season total of 62.  Her 67 saves rank's her among the top net minders in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.  Freshman Sonia Fuentes, senior Reina Cruz, junior Alex Fields and sophomore Sara Batiste were able to get off a shot apiece.  Alexis Mack had a season high of two shots, while Lane had three total shots and Bustos had a season high of two, to include two on goal.

Prairie View A&M will return back to play on Sunday, Sept. 16 when they host Incarnate Word in a 1 p.m. tilt at the PVAMU Soccer Field.
