PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team zipped past a tough Jackson State team in a 76-57 win on Saturday in the Baby Dome.
The teams found themselves tied at 2-2 early in the first quarter, until a fast break layup by junior guard
Dominique Newman pushed the Panthers ahead 4-2. Following a made layup from junior forward
Ke'Asia Williams at the 7:37 mark to put the team up 6-2. They eventually ended the quarter with a 15-13 lead.
PVAMU came out fast in the second quarter after a made three point shot from senior guard Sierra Shepard in the opening seconds of the period. The team then went on a 7-0 run led by Williams, gaining the Panthers a 28-17 lead with 5:06 left in the half. Senior guard
Shala Dobbins then followed with a 4-0 run of her own, advancing the team's lead to 32-17.
The Panthers went into halftime up 44-26. Williams led the team with 12 points going into the half.
PVAMU led by as many as 23 points in the third quarter off of a made three point shot from Dobbins at the 8:05 mark. Things slowed down for the team as they were outscored 22-15 and outrebounded 11-5 throughout the period, however Prairie View A&M was still able to keep a steady 59-48 lead going into the final quarter of play.
After outscoring JSU 17-9, PVAMU was able to recover from a slow start of the second half in the fourth quarter. Keeping a sizable lead throughout the period and also winning the rebound battle 14-6, before walking away with the 76-57 victory.
Dobbins led the team with 18 points, while Williams followed behind with a season high 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior center
Artavia Ford contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
The Panthers will conclude their three-game home stretch on Monday, Jan. 21 as they face Grambling State University in the Baby Dome for a 4 p.m. tip for Black Out and MLK Day.
