Panthers Secures Weekend Series Sweep With the Seventh Straight SWAC Win Monday


PINE BLUFF, Ark– Monday night made the eighth consecutive win for the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team, that remains undefeated (7-0) in conference play as they pushed past the Golden Lions of Arkansas - Pine Bluff with a 79-63 victory.
 
"I thought our preparation was really good," PVAMU Head men's basketball coach Byron Smith said. "I thought the guys' approach was solid and I thought we really executed."
 
The Panthers took a 15-0 early run during the first five minutes of the first half, led by junior forward Devonte Patterson's back-to-back layups at the start of the period. The team then followed behind with a 6-0 run ending with a layup from redshirt senior Dennis Jones that put Panthers up 21-1 over the Golden Lions at the 12:59 mark. Coming behind was a made three-point shot from senior guard Gary Blackston that lifted PVAMU 24-2 with still 12 minutes left to play in the first half.
 
A made layup from junior guard Gerard Andrus restored the team's 20 point lead at 33-13 at the 7:24 mark. With under five minutes to go, a layup from Blackston extended PVAMU's lead to 37-18. Patterson scored five of the team's six points in the remaining two minutes of the period to advance the score to 43-24 going into the intermission.
 
Blackston led the team with 14 points.
 
PVAMU went 4-4 from the free stripe line in the opening minutes of the second half, followed behind with another 4-0 run led by Andrus at the 16:40 mark to give the Panthers a 51-29 lead. Within the next four minutes of play another 6-0 run occured, ending on a layup from Jones putting the Panthers up 59-34 with 12:24 remaining in the second half.
 
Blackston scored eight straight points starting at the 10:35 mark, to push the lead up to a 66-49 advantage over the Golden Lions. With under four minutes remaining, layups from both Patterson and Blackston gave the team their 73-55 lead.
 
After six straight made free throws in the final two minutes of the game, PVAMU eventually walked away with the 79-63 victory.
 
Blackston led the team with 29 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for his fifth double-double of conference play and his sixth of the season. Jones followed behind with 16 points, and four assists.  Patterson contributed with 13 points, and four rebounds.
 
"We're brick by brick trying to build our culture," Smith said. "This is year three for me, and this team has given us a great chance to establish a really good culture. So we're going to enjoy this one tonight."
 
The Panthers will return home to face the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. at the Baby Dome.
