BATON ROUGE, La. – The Prairie View A&M soccer team used an explosive second half to take care of Southern 3-0 Sunday afternoon during a Southwestern Athletic Conference match at Jaguar Park.
"With two games on the road, especially with two difficult opponents and getting the results on the road like we have is extremely important especially here at Southern," said head PVAMU soccer coach Sonia Curvelo. " It wasn't an easy first 45 minutes, it was a very physical game. They (Southern) are a very athletic team as well and it was a battle inside the 18. The grass and condition of the field is a lot more bumpier so we had to challenge every ball that's inside the 18. It was nice to see our players score goals, because it's time where we are in the season and it's a confidence builder."
With the win, Prairie View A&M has posted four shutout wins in its first five conference matches.
The Lady Panthers (5-7, 4-1 SWAC) controlled possession, amassing 19 shots while holding Southern to eight attempts as the Jaguars (1-9-1, 0-4-1) weren't able to put a quality look on goal.
A defensive struggle early on, neither side was able to place on-target tries on net during the first 45 minutes of play. The switch flipped for Prairie View A&M after intermission, as senior forward Diana Neff took a pass from sophomore Kalia Brown and put it past the Southern goalkeeper for the match's first score of the game in the 52nd minute.
The Lady Panthers dominated from there, as redshirt junior midfielder Ashley Chala found the twine for Prairie View during the 81st minute, and Neff put home her second goal of the match in the 86th minute for insurance.
Junior goalkeeper Alexis Espino earned the shutout win. Prairie View A&M held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Southern's Jessenia Rivera led the Jaguars with three shots.
