JACKSON, Miss. — The Prairie View A&M volleyball team finished the weekend with a 3-2 record during the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Roundup.
The ladies started the weekend falling to both Alabama State (8-17, 5-5 SWAC) 3-1 and to Jackson State (9-18, 8-2 SWAC) 3-0 on Friday.
In the first match the Lady Panthers fell by the scores of 25-19, 22-25, 13-25, 24-26. Junior middle blocker Victoria Pearson led the way for the Lady Panthers, posting 12 kills, on 30 attempts. Junior Tamaira Armstrong and senior Cetara Carter finished with 10 kills apiece, respectively.
Senior setter Erica Jimenez led the team with 20 assists and contributed four digs and two aces. Freshman Skyla Childs posted a match-high 21 digs in the loss. For the match, PVAMU hit .191, while Bama State hit at a .311 clip. The Lady Hornets held the edge in blocks eight-four.
The Lady Panthers fell 3-0 in their second match of the day by the scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-14. Armstrong led the team with 12 kills, and five digs, while Pearson added five kills. Jimenez led PVAMU with 11 assists and added six digs one behind Childs who posted seven in the game.
Day two the Lady Panthers opened with a 3-0 win over Alcorn State (25-12, 25-19, 25-19).
Carter led the team with nine kills, two blocks and one dig, while freshman middle blocker Hannah Estupinan posted nine kills. Armstrong contributed with 15 digs, eight kills and two blocks.
Prairie View A&M went on to take another 3-0 win over Mississippi Valley State (25-15, 25-17, 25,19).
Pearson led the team with 13 kills, two blocks and one ace. Armstrong followed with 10 kills, four digs and one block, while freshman setter Jakarta Hope contributed with 12 assists and six digs.
On the final day the Lady Panthers took a 3-1 win over Alabama A&M (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13) on Sunday.
Pearson finished with a monster game of 20 kills and six digs, while Armstrong followed with 16 digs, 12 kills, two assists and one block. Carter also contributed with 10 kills, four blocks and one dig.
The Lady Panthers will return home on Sunday, Nov. 3 to face Grambling State for Senior Night. The match will take place at 5 p.m. in the Baby Dome.
