PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M soccer team continued its torrid stretch of play, closing the regular season with a 1-0 victory over Texas Southern during a Southwestern Athletic Conference match at the PVAMU Soccer Complex Friday evening
With the win, Prairie View A&M (10-7, 9-1 SWAC) set a new program record for most conference wins in a single season. The previous mark was eight, set by the 2014 Lady Panthers. Prairie View A&M is assured of the No. 2 seed in the upcoming 2019 SWAC Women's Soccer Tournament, while earning SWAC Regular Season Co-Champions title.
The Lady Panthers dominated possession throughout the first half, keeping the arch-rival Lady Tigers from attempting a single shot on net. Prairie View A&M eventually broke through thanks to a barrage of tries in the closing minutes of the first half.
At the 42nd minute, junior forward Jojo Bernal sparked a flurry of attempts for the Lady Panthers, as she and senior defender Alexis Mack took turns peppering shots toward Texas Southern goalie Salma Ghazal. Ghazal turned away a trio of tries, but senior midfielder Gina Zavala de Rojas found Mack off of a corner kick that eventually converted into the game-winning goal with 46 seconds left before intermission.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers were put on the defensive as Texas Southern managed to sustain pressure on the net. However, sophomore goalkeeper Quinn Josiah stonewalled any and all Lady Tiger attempts to secure the Lady Panthers' seventh-straight shutout victory.
Josiah made seven saves -- all in the second half -- in her sixth shutout win of the season. Prairie View A&M out-shot Texas Southern (6-10-1, 5-4-1 SWAC) 12-9, including an 8-6 edge in tries on goal.
Next up:
