11/12/2019 11:00:00 AM

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team travels to San Marcos to take on Texas State in a non-conference match-up Tuesday evening, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. from Strahan Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The Panthers (1-1) come into the game looking to rebound from a 73-69 setback at Central Florida. Senior Chancellor Ellis was the brightest spot for the Panthers, netting a career-high 29 points on 8-of-12 shooting from three-point range. Ellis currently leads the team in scoring at 21.0 points per game.

Early on, the Panthers offense has been productive, averaging 84.5 points per game. Four players are averaging double-figures in scoring: Ellis, senior Gerard Andrus (14.0 ppg), senior Antione Lister (11.5 ppg), and senior Darius Williams (11.0 ppg).

This will be the second of five non-conference games versus in-state schools, and the first of two games versus Sun Belt Conference opposition for the Panthers. So far, PVAMU is 1-0 on the season against in-state schools and under coach Byron Smith are 1-2 against Sun Belt Conference teams.

This will be the third all-time meeting between the two teams, with Texas State holding a 2-0 head-to-head record. The Bobcats won the most recent  meeting 64-57 in 2016.

Scouting the Competition:
- Texas State (1-1) is coming off a 78-71 loss to Air Force on Nov. 9. The Bobcats are considered one of the top contenders in the Sun Belt following a 24-10 record in the 2018-19 season, a campaign that resulted in a run to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Bobcats were predicted to finish fourth in Sun Belt preseason polls and return eight players from last season's squad.

- Leading the way for Texas State is senior guard Nijal Pearson, a 2018-19 All-Sun Belt First Team selection who received preseason first-team honors for this season. The program's all-time leader in three-pointers made, Pearson leads the team in scoring at 16.0 points per game. Mason Harrell (12.0 ppg) and Eric Terry (12.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg) have also flashed as key contributors for the Bobcats.
