PRAIRIE VIEW – Redshirt freshman
Trazon Connley accounted for 308 total yards (223 passing) and three scores as the Prairie View A&M football team cruised past Edward Waters 41-14 Saturday evening in Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field.
The win moves the Panthers to 5-5 on the season.
The Panthers struck first as junior receiver
Tony Mullins dazzled with a 46-yard punt return for a touchdown just under three and a half minutes into the game. Following the point-after by kicker
Amaury Martinez, the Panthers led 7-0.
Edward Waters responded with a 12-play, 63-yard drive that took up more than seven minutes of game time. Maliek Stephens capped the drive with a 1-yard score as EWC tied the game.
From there, it was all Panthers as an explosive second quarter put the home team firmly in control. Connley and company returned salvo with a marathon march down the field, going 75 yards in 11 plays as senior
Caleb Broach finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown scamper, putting the Panthers back in front.
After freshman
Ahmad Antoine snuffed out a fake punt to set up the Panthers in prime position, Connley hit junior wide-out
Travis O'Connor from 36 yards out to put Prairie View A&M ahead by double-digits with 11:51 left in the half.
The sides traded punts, but on the Panthers' final possession of the half, Connley made a 36-yard scamper to spark a nine-play, 83-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard scoring toss from Connley to Broach.
Edward Waters momentarily cut into the Panthers' lead as Roshard Branch finished a seven-play, 80-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Wilkers with 10:59 left in the third. Prairie View A&M reasserted its stranglehold on matters as senior
Dawonya Tucker scored from one yard out to put a bow on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that carried into the fourth quarter.
On Edward Waters' next possession, junior Demarcus Robinson stepped in front of a Branch pass for his first interception of the season. Though the Panthers fumbled it back on their next turn, Robinson got his hands on another pick on the ensuing drive, this one at the expense of EWC signal-caller Braden Minor.
Connley and the Panthers put the game to bed on the following drive, as grad transfer receiver
Jordan Jones hauled in a 10-yard pass from Connley for the final margin.
Connley was 19-of-27 passing, adding 85 yards on the ground. Tucker rushed for 58 yards. O'Conner had a game-high 90 receiving yards, while Mullins made eight grabs for 67 yards.
Defensively, senior lineman
Stephen Scott and junior linebacker
Storey Jackson each made 10 total stops. Sophomore
Jason Dumas collected a pair of sacks. The Panthers limited Edward Waters to 227 total yards.
The Panthers will have an open week upcoming before concluding the season on Thanksgiving at Alabama State.
