Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Surge Not Enough for Panthers in Setback at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Despite a valiant effort, the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team fell 70-56 to Texas Friday evening at the Frank Erwin Center.

Junior Lennell Henry led Prairie View A&M in scoring for the second-straight game, pouring in 12 points along with four rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Chancellor Ellis scored 11 points. Nine different Panthers scored in the game.

Matt Coleman III led Texas with 17 points, four assists and three boards. Andrew Jones added 15 points for the Longhorns.

Down 11-5 early in the first half, the Panthers stayed close as Henry converted a lay-up to bring the Panthers (1-3) within four. Texas continued to hold the upper hand, but with the Panthers down six, junior Dajuan Madden scored on consecutive possessions to bring Prairie View A&M within two with 8:30 left in the half.

Madden eventually knocked down a jumper to pull the Panthers within one, but a late lay-up from Jase Febres gave Texas a 26-22 lead at the break.

Prairie View A&M stayed in striking distance of the Longhorns through the initial goings of the second half, but Febres nailed a pair of treys to key an 8-0 run that left Prairie View A&M down 37-27 with 13:49 left. The Longhorns pushed ahead by 13 midway through the second half, and though the Panthers put together a 6-0 run to pull within seven, the Longhorns responded with a 9-1 run to increase its lead to 15.

Down 60-47 with 3:31 left, Prairie View A&M made a final push to pull within eight with 1:08 remaining as senior guard Gerard Andrus converted a lay-up to start a 9-4 run that he later capped with a jumper, but the Panthers were unable to get closer down the stretch.

The Panthers outshot Texas on the night, knocking down 21-of-49 (42.9%) from the floor compared to a 24-of-57 (42.1%) mark for the Longhorns. The battle on the boards was virtually even, with Texas holding a 32-31 advantage though the Panthers snagged 24 defensive rebounds to 22 for the Longhorns.

The Panthers reserves were outscored 30-13 by Texas' bench players.

Prairie View A&M returns to action Monday when the Panthers take on California at 9 p.m. CST (7 p.m. local time).
