PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team travels to Riverside, Calif. to take on Georgia State Friday evening.
Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. CST/4:30 p.m. PST from the California Baptist University Events Center. The game is part of the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
The Panthers will face either California Baptist or Central Arkansas the following night.
The Panthers (1-4) come into the game trying to rebound from a 54-50 loss to California on Nov. 17. Senior Chancellor Ellis and sophomore Faite Williams led the team with 12 points each. For Williams, the 12 points represented a career best.
Junior Lennell Henry led the team with 11 boards and leads the
team with 8.0 rebounds per game.
Ellis leads the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game and is shooting 48.1 percent from the field.
Prairie View A&M is 2-3 in the state of California under coach Byron Smith. However, the Panthers are 4-1 in their last five neutral-site games under Smith.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams. In 2017, Prairie View A&M topped Georgia State 71-56 in a neutral-site affair in Las Vegas during the MGM Resorts Main Event Tournament.
Scouting the Competition:
- Georgia State is off to a 1-3 start to the season, having had competitive losses against then-#2 Duke and Georgetown in recent outings.
- Welcoming first-year coach Rob Lanier to the fold, Georgia State was chosen to finish sixth in the Sun Belt during preseason predictions. Georgia State is seeking its third-straight Sun Belt Conference title and third-straight NCAA tournament berth this season.
- Georgia State has four players averaging double-figures in scoring, led by Corey Allen (16.3 PPG) and second-team All-Sun Belt preseason honoree Kane Williams (13.3 PPG)
